Struggling with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Trauma can feel isolating, but recognizing that you deserve support is the first step toward reclaiming your life.

You're wondering what really is PTSD and trauma?

PTSD is a physiological condition affecting the mind and body that can occur after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It often involves flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Symptoms can manifest in many ways, affecting your emotions, relationships, and daily functioning.

Working with a therapist that understands the nuances of PTSD is crucial; it’s not a sign of weakness, but rather a testament to your incredible resilience.

Experiences of trauma are multidimensional

Trauma can be defined as an experience that is physiologically stressful. Have you experienced something that left you feeling overwhelmed, helpless and feeling a loss of control? If yes, then you might have experienced a traumatic experience, psychological trauma leaves you with mental and emotional wounds that feel “stuck” no matter what you do.

It doesn’t have to be something recent that has left you feeling out of sorts, it can also be something that happened long ago, or long periods of stressful times. There are a few common types of trauma.

  • Somatic Therapy is a non-pathologizing therapy modality that addresses the whole person—recognizing that it’s not “all in your head” and often our struggles manifest physically. This integrated approach leads to deeper healing as it addresses the information the body is holding onto as well.

  • Also referred to as complex trauma. ex: ongoing bullying, chronic childhood neglect, domestic abuse, living in a danger zone such as a war zone, or crime-filled neighborhood, battling a life-threatening illness or facing an ongoing traumatic event.

  • These are the commonly overlooked situations that often cause trauma. ex: experiencing a deeply embarrassing or disappointing experience, losing someone close to you (due to death or moving cities), breaking up with a significant relationship in your life, or interacting with someone who is deliberately cold hearted or cruel (at work or in personal life.) This may also include feeling chronically ignored, unseen, or experiencing chronic stress for example: a critical mother, yelling in the home or seeing high family conflict (or complete disconnect from parents) while growing up.

  • Traumatic stress refers to the experience of stress related to events you weren't directly involved in but cause you a lot of distress. For example, when you hear about man-made disasters such as terrorist attacks, mass shootings, a plane crash, or natural disasters, such as a flood, tornado or fire. Although you may not have been directly impacted, watching the news and seeing horrific images can leave an imprint on your mind and body.
